All Wombat market data software products are designed to give our
customers maximum flexibility by remaining agnostic to data vendors,
middleware vendors and third party technology vendors alike.
Market data users are feeling increasingly frustrated by the range
of heavy handed tactics used by leading data and technology providers to
lock in business. Aggressive contracts are often employed to provide high
level leverage. Users are finding themselves locked into the proprietary
symbology of vendors, locked into their APIs and locked into their
middleware. Very often users find themselves in the position where the
have to pay to get connected to the data feeds, pay for their data
packages, pay again for a distribution infrastructure, then pay an
additional fee for each user who accesses the data. In some cases
additional licenses are required just to allow application developers to
use client side APIs.
Huge changes in trading patterns are now propagating through the
market data industry. Decimalization and reduced transaction costs have
accelerated automation to drive down average trade sizes, while creating
huge increases in quote volumes. Data latency is becoming a fundamental
competitive battleground; meanwhile exponentially increasing data volumes
are stressing systems industrywide. Fragmentation of the liquidity pool
between the major exchanges, ECNs and internal crossing networks is making
it more difficult than ever to find a match.
The ongoing results of these changes may make market data delivery a
more important cornerstone of the trading floor than at any time in the
last decade. Increasing volumes will force all firms to restructure their
market data technology or get swamped. Meanwhile direct access, faster,
accurate and complete data is required to compete. Market data users will
need maximum flexibility to survive and prosper through what could be
difficult times.
At Wombat both our software and business model are designed to
provide our customers with maximum choice. Some components are summarized
below:
| Issue | Description |
|---|
| Data source agnostic | The Wombat distributed ticker plant is neutral to whether
data is generated internally or comes from direct exchange feeds,
aggregated vendor feeds, or internal data sources. Flexible
normalization modules make it easy to convert data streams from
one format/symbology to another. |
| Platform independent | The MAMA (Middleware Agnostic Messaging API) & PAPA
(Pub/Sub Agnostic Publishing API) the middleware agnostic Wombat
APIs make it possible for publishers to publish onto any platform
and for clients to subscribe to a single API, irrespective of the
underlying platform. Wombat’s PAPA API currently support all the
major platforms in production including ciServer, Triarch, Tibco
RV, Elvin, RMDS and the Wombat Transport. Our objective is to
deliver a solution that is agnostic to even our own
middleware! |
| Symbology independent | Wombat solutions support multiple symbologies, including
the ability to convert between symbologies at any level in the
architecture. Customers have the option of implementing custom
symbologies. |
| Cascading Cache | Wombat Cascading Cache and Bridge modules make it possible
to switch between formats, symbologies and platforms at any level
within the architecture. Conflation (or inflation) can also be
carried out at any level. |
| Hardware independent | Server side modules support Linux & Solaris. Windows,
Linux & Solaris will be supported on the client side. |
| Source code | Larger customers are provided with source code for all the
components. If required, Wombat will also merge and support
customized versions developed by customers in a dedicated source
branch. |
| Open data model | Wombat uses a proprietary open data model as a canonical
format in all major components. Customers have full access to this
model. |
| No end-user fees | The Wombat software licensing model is based on a regional,
site, or divisional hierarchy. There are no ‘end-user’ fees for
data redistribution or the development of client applications.
Wombat does not charge for development licenses for its APIs. No
additional licenses are required to facilitate application
development. |
| Multiple flavors | Wombat client side APIs are available in C, C++, java, and
COM. |
